School of Languages alumni meet after 40 years
Thirty former School of Languages and Area Studies students and staff from French, German and Spanish Studies met in Portsmouth on 6 June 2015 to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Some had not met since they graduated in 1978.
Krystyna Pickering looks back on the reunion:
Those able to arrive in the afternoon met at the appropriately named “Café Parisien” for lunch. This was followed by a tour of the University library and presentation kindly facilitated by Anne Worden, Faculty Librarian. We are grateful to the Alumni Office and the University premises team for allowing us to make a nostalgic visit to the Wiltshire Building (formerly the Drill Hall and SLAS departmental building).
In the evening, we gathered at The Bridge Tavern in Old Portsmouth for drinks and a meal with the whole group. We raised a glass to absent friends. Most of us stayed overnight at the Royal Beach Hotel in Southsea which has become a favourite stopover for reunion groups. Our reunion coincided with the annual History Studies reunion of the same era and we shared a few drinks in the late evening.
The week-end concluded on a sunny Sunday afternoon with a traditional walk along the sea-front to the Still and West pub. A great week-end was enjoyed by all and there was unanimous agreement to meet up again soon.
