After continuing his studies at Portsmouth through to postgraduate level, alumnus Gareth Beeston is now Managing Director at Other World Escapes and here he tells us about his journey since leaving the University of Portsmouth.

Ever since graduating in 2012 from the University, I have always wanted to reconnect with Portsmouth. I studied a Media Studies and Entertainment Technology degree followed by a Marketing (Digital Media) Postgraduate degree at the Business School.

I have always had a passion for business and my Master's gave me a great wealth of knowledge and helped me to discover my drive to become an entrepreneur.

Since completing my studies, I went onto work in many roles across the University; Online Course Developer at the Business School and then as a Web Communications Officer at the Faculty of Technology. I loved working for the University, and it further drove me to continue my studies at the University of Southampton where I studied for a Master's in Web Science and a PhD in Social Innovation, graduating in 2018.

Alongside my PhD, I also set up my own digital marketing agency and started a part-time role as course leader in Digital Marketing at The University of The West Indies in Barbados.

All of this brings me up to the present day and my latest enterprise - Other World Escapes: an immersive escape room in Southampton where you enter through a portal to another world. You must work as a team to complete challenges, talk with in-game characters and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of the realistic setting.

We currently have a Mayan temple and a 1930's Steampunk cigar lounge called Vermilion and consistently achieve 5-star ratings on TripAdvisor.

We are also hoping to expand to a second venue in Portsmouth this year and are really looking forward to being part of the city once again. For me, it’s a city and University that I have many fond memories of.
