Sports Science 20 year reunion in Dublin
A group of 10 of us met at Pompey studying Sports Science (1996-99) and immediately became firm friends…now friends for life. We all see each other frequently throughout the year and have been best men at each other’s weddings and are godfathers to each other kids but getting together “en masse” has proved more difficult now we have family commitments. Therefore, a few years back we decided that for one weekend a year (usually the first weekend in October) we would all make sacrosanct and hold a reunion leaving our wives/girlfriends and kids at home. So, boys only!
We had a weekend of festivities, this time going slightly further afield to Dublin in celebration of our 20 year reunion. Alumni present were Messrs Barling, Paul Gould, Andrew Wright, Nick Carter, Paul Hanlon, Andrew Firmin, Tom Cadbury, Lee Dineen, Tom Klinkenberg and Ugur Engin.
Arriving on a chilly Friday lunchtime, we thought the most natural place to head for would be a pub for a spot of lunch. Seven hours and “a few” pints of the black stuff later we retreated to our rented apartment (via a couple of other licenced premises) for a takeaway and general catch up; being not quite as young as we once were, two nights “out-out” on the trot are harder than they used to be!
Saturday involved a leisurely breakfast and then a wander around the Guinness factory (mandatory photo attached) before heading into Temple Bar. We chose this weekend deliberately as, being big rugby fans, we knew it was an international match weekend and the “craic” would be good. And so it was! We enjoyed seeing Ireland getting beaten and England winning. Much banter with the locals ensued.
We have a tradition of nominating one person to arrange the next year’s reunion which includes a trophy presentation to the next year’s reunion “chairman” as they are called. You know who you are and we will look forward to whatever it is you are planning!
Saturday was rounded off with a curry in the early hours in a ropey back-street Dublin curry house. The only place open at 3am but it served a purpose!
